DWR Releases Final CASGEM Groundwater Basin Prioritization Results
To meet requirements specified in the California Water Code, the Department of Water Resources (DWR) developed the CASGEM Basin Prioritization Process. 515 groundwater basins and subbasins throughout California were analysed against criteria which included population, dependence on wells for municipal and agricultural uses, irrigated acreage, local groundwater impacts and other unique considerations. In January, 2014, DWR published the draft results. The CASGEM Program also held five workshops throughout the State to discuss the basin prioritization process and the draft results. The CASGEM Program accepted public comments on the draft basin prioritization results.
The final Basin Prioritization results are now available on the basin prioritization page of the CASGEM Program web site (http://www.water.ca.gov/groundwater/casgem/basin_prioritization.cfm).
In the final prioritization, Kings Sub-basin ranks as the 9th highest priority basin in the DWR South Central Region, and ranks 17th among the 515 basins that were prioritized statewide. Nearby Kaweah Sub-basin ranks 5th statewide, Madera Sub-basin 6th, Kern County Sub-basin 21st and the Westside Subbasin 22nd statewide.
